Chapter One - The Internet

The internet that we use today, which is defined as a global network of computers  that use the TCP/IP network protocols to facilitate data transmission and exchange (http://define.com/Internet), was actually created as a step to try to get one up on the Russians.  They were successful in launching Sputnik, the first sattelite into space.  The United states formed ARPA, or Advanced Research Projects Agency, to try to stay ahead of the russians in Science and Technology for military purposes.  ArpaNet was created as a network of computers exchanging data in different locations so coummunications would be possible in the wake of a Nuclear strike by USSR.  At first they exchanged information using a protocol named NCP or Network Control Protocol, but this was only able to establish communications like systems on the ame network,  We learned that this was changed to tcp/ip in 1972 to allow different types of networks to communicate.  Not until the early 90's did we see anything that would resemble the internet as we know it today.  The 90's wer such a huge growth period for the "net", creating a larger network everytime someone else joined in.
